EGO LV1 - THE FIRST LEVER VALVE OPERATED PAINTBALL MARKER

When Planet Eclipse decided to halt the annual release of its flagship marker, the Ego, many people assumed that is was because Planet felt that there was little could be done to improve on the existing design; this simply wasn't the case. In 2011 Planet Eclipse decided that rather than spend time making small, incremental changes to its models - in order to conform to the industry annual release model – it would utilize time more productively by making more significant changes, less often.

DEVELOPMENT

LV (LEVER VALVE)

Internally the Ego LV1 introduces a revolutionary new design that rewrites what can be achieved with this type of platform. The system incorporates a profiled (cam-shaped) lever between the rammer and the exhaust valve that is used to separate the action of the rammer and bolt from the action of the valve. This additional element in the mechanism has several major benefits over the conventional directly-linked knock-open system, particularly with respect to the force required to open the valve and the rate at which the valve is opened. This indirect operation of the exhaust valve means it can be opened slower, with considerably less force, yet retain excellent seal integrity, something that has blighted other low opening force or balanced valve systems.

While existing designs may require a low force to open the exhaust valve they are still bound by the need to overcome blowback using the speed and mass of the bolt which means that the valve has to be opened with a greater speed than is actually required. Often, these designs will also suffer from low closing forces that can drastically affect efficiency. AT (AIR TRANSFER) PIPE

Also new for the Ego LV1 is the AT (air transfer) Pipe system. The conventional fittings and macroline hose of previous Ego designs has been removed and the gas is now routed through the frame and across to the HPR via an adjustable pipe. This design keeps the marker body height to an absolute minimum and keeps the trigger hand as close to the barrel axis whilst negating the need for complex and tortured gas paths through the marker body. To ease technical support of the marker the SL4 HPR can either be completely replaced with a standard SL3 HPR or the SL4 swivel can be quickly and easily replaced with the optional hose-style swivel to allow the LV1 to be gassed up with the frame removed. A handy ‘Tech’ Kit is available that includes the SL4 swivel, hose and tank adaptor for those that feel they may need it.

The LV1 is fitted with a new Zick3 rammer that uses a longer stroke in order to help facilitate both of the above while allowing for the longer valving stroke required by the lever mechanism and, contrary to popular GONE IS THE INSTITUTIONALISED 1 INCH BOLT AND RAMMER STROKE FOUND IN ALL OTHER POPPET VALVE MARKERS...belief, this additional stroke length has negligible effect on cyclic rates, with the LV1 capable of rates of fire well into the 20+bps range. The Zick3 also has a far more pronounced dual force set-up designed to help reduce the initial force on the ball as it is pushed towards the barrel and to offer more cushioning on the return stroke. The LV1 also benefits from the fact that, as standard, it will come complete with two different weights of rammer. The Standard rammer offers the benefit of allowing the LV1 to run at the lowest possible operating pressures. It is perfect for shooting the most fragile paint or when looking for the quietest shot. The LV1 also benefits from the fact that, as standard, it will come complete with two different weights of rammer. EFFICIENCY

One of the benefits of the new valve, bolt, lever and rammer design is that the operating pressures of the Ego LV1 are significantly lower than in previous Egos. The low pressure regulator (LPR) operates in the 65-80psi range and the SL4 high pressure regulator (HPR) supplies air to the valve chamber in the range of 120-135psi. Both the LPR and the HPR have been redesigned: the LPR in order to house it inside the body, leaving the area under the barrel clear of any obstructions that might impede grip; and the HPR in order to shorten its overall length such that it blends both aesthetically and ergonomically with the internally mounted LPR. Both regulators are designed to operate within limits that will prevent accidental damage to key components such as the solenoid and the exhaust valve. The SL4 regulator is also capable of operating with tank regulators ranging from SLP-level outputs right up to high pressure (800psi) outputs. It's an incredibly versatile regulator.

MAINTENANCE

Ease of repair and maintenance has also been significantly improved in the LV1 by making the majority of the markers key components accessible without the need for tools. The new OOPS combines a low profile, ultra-easy on/off/purge function and front-mounted hose exit. As with all Eclipse markers since 2007 the Etek4 utilizes the T-Slot Rail. The Etek4 will also accept a POPS ASA.

The incredibly successful Zick2 kit is now to be found as standard on the Etek4. The Etek4 kit utilizes a unique rammer cap to work with the Etek4 rammer housing.

NEW Shaft4 Etek Barrel

Like the full-fat Shaft4 barrel, the Etek4 barrel utilizes a 2-piece, reverse threaded construction with a longer rear control bore for increased efficiency and consistency. The barrel is internally finished identically to the Geo and Ego Shaft4 barrel but features simplified external machining. The rear bore is honed to 0.693" diameter and both front and backs are compatible with Shaft4 Boost Kits and Tips.

Deftek Offset Feed

The feed is offset to one side by a small amount. This prevents the balls that tumble into the breech from bouncing excessively and causing breaks and chops.

Cure Bolt

Again carried over from the Ego range, the Etek4 now has a Cure bolt as standard, as well as a body-contoured cut at the rear so the bolt blends seamlessly into the marker body. The Cure bolt helps the Etek4 to shoot the most fragile of tournament grade paints without worry of breaks due to the bolt clipping paintballs in the feed stack. The Etek4 will accept Cure3+ and Cure4 upgrade bolts.

Direct Mounted Solenoid

The Etek4 Minifold mounts the ever-faithful SMC solenoid directly to the marker body, directly adjacent to the rammer. There is just a single hose taking the LP air from the LPR to the Minifold where it is filtered for added protection against debris.

Adjustable LPR

With the same LPR found on the Ego11 and CSL, the Etek4 offers precise control of LPR pressure, without the risk of accidental over-pressurization of the solenoid or rammer.

Fully Adjustable Trigger

The Trigger rides in a self-lubricating trigger holder that clips neatly into the frame. This, combined with the magnetic trigger return mechanism, creates a smooth, positive trigger feel. It is adjustable for fore and aft stop as well as magnetic return strength.

Break Beam Sensor System (BBSS)

Using the same components and software as the Ego BBSS system, the Etek4 ensures that the marker excels at preventing chopped balls in the breech. When enabled, the Etek4 will only fire once a ball has loaded into the breech. If the BBSS system sees any kind of fault, the software automatically overrides the system and the marker continues to fire at a greatly reduced rate.

LED Board (3 tru-color LED indicators)

These 3 clever LEDs allow easy programming of all the user definable parameters by greatly simplifying the programming process. The top LED indicates 10s of units, the middle displays 1s and the bottom shows 0.1 increments.

Programmable Firing Modes

Etek4 has user-definable settings for Dwell, Ball-in-Place, Eyes-Off ROF, Capped ROF (un-capped in Semi 1), Debounce, and Firing Mode. As standard the Etek4 has the capability to be set to cover every tourney regulation.

Soft Grips

The Etek4 grips follow the same design as the Geo and Ego grips. Comfortable, slim, grippy and soft.

The Etek4 LT utilizes glass-reinforced impact resistant composite parts for the frame, eye cover, feedtube and OOPS knob. All other materials are the same high grade alloys found in the Geo and Ego range of markers.

The Etek4 AM is of an All Metal construction that replaces all of the above composite parts with machined alloy parts.

1. All New Solenoid Design - The Geo3 has taken the basic operating principle of the Geo2.1 and completely reworked it. In order to achieve optimum efficiency in a wide range of circumstances it is beneficial to isolate the firing chamber from the gas supply during firing cycle so that no excess gas is lost down the barrel after the ball has exited. The Geo has always incorporated this feature by selectively controlling supply to the firing chamber via the ISCIS (Innovative Solenoid Controlled Isolation System) Valve. The Geo3 incorporates the Second Generation ISCIS Valve, a complete rework of the original principle aiming to improve efficiency and reliability. The main body of the solenoid is now all aluminium. The secondary spool-driven poppet that controls shut-off of the gas supply to the firing chamber during the firing cycle now works independently of the bolt drive side of the solenoid. The new design also no longer utilises the back-check ball or the Purge Control Valve (PCV) of the old Geos which reduces parts count and further improves reliability. The whole mechanism is more reliable and far more robust than the old solenoid. More importantly to some, by reducing losses from the solenoid during the firing cycle there has been an increase in efficiency in the Geo3.

2. New Bolt Speed Control (BSC) - A great deal has been learnt through the development, testing and subsequent on-field use of the Ego11's adjustable solenoid flow controls. By accurately controlling the flow of the bolt drive exhaust gasses through the solenoid the acceleration and speed of the bolt can be adjusted. Changes in the bolt speed results in changes to feel, sound signature, paint handling, rate of fire and even efficiency. By allowing the user access to this type of adjustment "on-the-fly" with an external adjuster located in the side of the frame means that a player can alter the feel and performance profile of their marker within seconds. In some cases at extreme levels of adjustment there may be need to fine tune the markers dwell to match the required bolt speed, but in general use the BSC adjustment is as simple as dialling in the velocity on the inline regulator.

3. New CureST AND CureST2 Bolt - With players continually wanting to shoot the most fragile paint possible we are constantly striving to improve the way that our markers receive paintballs into them, how the ball is transferred from the breech to the barrel, and how the ball is accelerated down the barrel. We do everything we can to make sure that the paint is handled in the most efficient way possible while still fulfilling all the other criteria required for a modern paintball marker to be competitive. During the loading and firing cycle the bolt plays probably the most crucial role out of all the components in the marker. With the Geo3 we incorporate a uniquely long bolt stroke. Doing this allows us to manipulate the profile and form at the head of the bolt in a significant manner when compared to other bolts and still provide a good breech seal during firing. The Extra stroke length is utilised to provide a shape to the head of the bolt that acts as a gentle interface between both the ball that is being pushed into the breech and the ball that is second in the ball stack, awaiting loading. The Geo3 bolt takes this to the next level with the CureST2 Bolt by providing a fully cushioned, rubber bolt head that is used to reduce impact forces on both the ball in the breech and the ball in the stack. It allows paint that would have previously been thought un-shootable to be shot with complete effectiveness. As if that wasn't enough, you will also find the original CureST bolt included as standard with the Geo3.

4. New Gen3 Propshaft and Can Assembly – The Geo3 comes with a modified Propshaft and Can Assembly. The propshaft still benefits from the unique spring-loaded Drive Core but modifications to the Propshaft tip improve gas flow through the bolt and past the tip while still keeping the propshaft perfectly concentric within the bolt. This Drive Core prevents air-loss both on the firing stroke of the bolt, leaving residual, previously wasted air trapped in the valve chamber, as well as ensuring the valve chamber is fully sealed prior to re-filling on the return stroke of the bolt. This results in better efficiency and faster recharge of the valve chamber. The new Can and Bolt have previous pressure relief vents that were required for safe degassing of the old ISCIS solenoid removed. The removal of these vents results in less gas wastage per shot.

5. New Frame and Trigger Geometry – The Geo3 sees the grip-frame moved up and back over the previous generation bringing the rear hand closer to the barrel axis for an even more natural feel in the hand. Moving the hand higher and further back helps reduce the amount of felt recoil and produces a more stable platform whether firing single shots or in full ramp. The Geo3 trigger has also been borrowed directly from the Ego11 and is 4-way externally adjustable with both magnetic and leaf spring return mechanism and the option of both Opto or micro-switch actuation built in. The frame itself has been strengthened to reduce chances of accidental damage yet still designed to be the primary crumple zone in cases of large impacts.

6. New Console and Grips - Following on from successful implementation of a full length grip, pushbutton and display window console on the Ego11 the Geo3 includes its own variation on the theme. A long, soft gripping surface added all the way up the back of the frame right up to the body interface. The Geo3 also includes the Ego11 grips with twin screws per side and their slim, sticky feel.

7. New Integrated Body Filter - The majority of solenoid and drive-train issues can be completely avoided through proper filtration of the air supply. Unfortunately air provided by fields or events isn't always perfect, so in order to better protect the user’s investment and to ensure that the Geo3 works for longer and better between maintenance stops there is now a replaceable filter captured within the FRM. The filter protects the solenoid unit as well as the bolt, propshaft and can from ingress of dirt and debris from the air supply, POPS, fittings and inline reg.

8. SL3 In-Line Regulator – The SL3 reg is more accurate, more consistent, with less creep and faster recharge than any previous Eclipse Reg. On top of that it will allow the Geo3 to operate with LP, MP or HP tanks with no fluctuation in performance or velocity. Switch from HP tank to LP tank without needing to adjust the regulator. New design means that the Geo3 will shoot down to the last 200psi of tank pressure with next-to-zero loss in velocity. The new SL3 regulator also has reversible and replaceable reg seal. The Geo3 naturally utilizes the incredibly popular angled swivel unit found on the Ego11.

9. POPS ASA System - The POPS ASA has quickly established itself as one of the best ASA's ever produced. It is simple to operate, quick to engage and de-gas and extremely reliable and robust. That the hose exits from the front to give a nice tight line between the ASA and reg is just a bonus.

10. Shaft4 Barrel – The Shaft4 has been developed specifically to improve efficiency and consistency. By manipulating the length and bore of the rear control bore section the new barrel gives higher velocities than older Shaft barrels for the same settings. This leads to an improvement in both efficiency and consistency as well as reducing the sound signature of the marker.

11. Circuit Board – 16-bit, 16mips microprocessor; user-replaceable, low power, transflective LCD module with full colour backlight, redesigned for added robustness; graphical user interface; optimised solenoid drive circuitry offering increased accuracy of Dwell and ROF control; micro-switch and opto-electronic trigger sensing; audible indicator.
